Description

Six-panelled account of Maori traffic with Europeans in mokomokai or dried heads, from 1770 (a head sold to Joseph Banks) to the 1830s and later. The trade was banned around 1831, but continued illegally

These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore.
