Mr Ernie Abbott holding a small cauliflower which cost him $1.40. Photographed by Evening Post staff photographer Alan Stevenson on the 16th of September 1977

In two weeks the price of cauliflowers had risen from 59 cents to $1.40. According to the Department of Trade and Industry this was because they were an off-season luxury. According to a vegetable market spokesman recent cold weather was the problem. Mr Abbott who was the Vice President of the Caretakers and Cleaners Union, supported by the union, delivered a motion to the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Adams-Schnider, condemning the rise in prices.

Ernie Abbott was also the victim of the Trades Hall bombing in Wellington in 1984.
