Description

Invitation card to a ball. The name of the invitee is not filled in. The border incorporates the figure of a woman holding up the announcement, and there is a black cat sitting on a new moon in the top right corner.

"Temuka leader" 6 June 1899, page 2, reports: "Last Friday evening the spinsters of Burkes' Pass held a most successful ball in the schoolroom, when they entertained the bachelors from all round the district, some of the visitors coming from as far south as Timaru. The room was very prettily decorated with flowers, evergreens, etc., and the secretary, Miss Amy Keefe, and committee did their utmost to ensure a pleasant evening for all. About fifty couples took part in the grand march, and things were kept going merrily until half-past four on Saturday morning. Mr Cooper, from Temuka, assisted by Mr Meredith, supplied excellent dance music, and Mr Budd successfully catered to the wants of the inner man, while Mr W. Manning made a good MC. During the evening Mr J. Leven contributed a comic song, which took immensely, and Mr Meredith just hit the mark with his recitation 'The Amateur Rider'. At the conclusion of ceremonies Mr Cartwright very heartily thanked the spinsters of Burke's Pass for the enjoyable ball they had tendered to the bachelors that evening".
