James Gibb was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and educated at the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh. He married Jeanie Gibb in 1881 and they sailed for Victoria in 1882, finally arriving in Otago in 1886. He was minister to First Church, Dunedin for 17 years and minister to St John's Church, Willis Street, Wellington. In 1901 he became Moderator of the United Church.
