Description

A Maori boy, dressed in European clothes, seated on a bed covered with a fringed flax cloak, with pictures pinned to the raupo-covered walls behind him and a jacket hanging from it. Either painted at St John's College, Purewa (Meadowbank, Auckland) during 'Himiona Tu's' time there as a student, or inside the boy's home. Himiona is a transliteration of the European name Simon and suggests the boy has been baptised.
