Published in Making New Zealand, Vol 28, page 7 with the caption: "A field of three in the wahines' race. Maori women were pioneers of their sex in riding astride."

Caption in Wanderlust magazine reads: The Wahines race. A side-saddle is unknown in these parts...riders simply tied their gowns round their ankles.
