Description

Photographs taken in the Bay of Islands and Hokianga districts in the late 1890s, by Frank J Denton. Include several of Paihia; the church with ruins of Archdeacon Williams' house; church belfry (standing alone in a field in front of the church); monument to Archdeacon Williams, Paihia Cemetery, `raised solely by Maori subscription'; and monument to the Treaty of Waitangi. Views of Kerikeri include the oldest wooden house, and the oldest stone house in New Zealand; and Kerikeri Falls (Rainbow Falls). At Waimate views show ruins of the first mill in New Zealand, remains of a factory near the old mill; puriri trees; and Waimate Church. Pakaraka views show interior and exterior views of Pakaraka Church; and `The Retreat', Archdeacon Williams' residence.
