Mahara house, Waikanae

Description: Mahara house, a superior accomodation house in Waikanae. Mahara House was built by Hemi Matenga Waipunaahau, younger brother of Wi Parata Te Kakakura Waipunaahau, of Ngati Toa and Te Ati Awa ki Waikanae about the year 1901. It was managed by his nephew Natanahira Wi Parata. The house was later destroyed by fire in the 1930s. Mahara House often accomodated those that visited Waikanae for shooting, fishing, hunting and horse racing (at the Waikanae Hack Racing Club, also owned by the Parata family).. Description: Te Mahia Wi Parata and a group of four unidentified female relatives at Waikanae. The group is sitting in a clearing with two sauce pans cooking on an open wood fire in front of them. Te Mahia is sitting at far right. Another adult woman, probably a niece is seated with her with three young girls (sisters ?).
