Early volumes describe life as a labourer living at Fife Bank and Dundee, Scotland. In 1863 Keir emigrated to New Zealand on the `Mermaid' with his father, stepmother and brothers, arriving in Lyttelton on 17 Feb 1864. He worked as a labourer in Christchurch. Refers to gold rush in Otago and wars in the North Island.
