Description

Photograph of an automatic sun valve, a device used to turn the beacon of automatic gas-lights (such as lighthouse lights) on and off.

Originally published with the caption: `The device used to operate all automatic gas lights in this country. Sunlight is absorbed by a copper tube coated with lamb-black in the centre, and is converted into heat. The heat causes the tube to expand, thus closing off the gas supply and extinguishing the light. When night falls, the tube contracts and opens the gas valve, turning on the light.' (Evening Post, 27 August 1964).

Photograph taken in August 1964 by an unidentified photographer for the Evening Post.
