Group portrait of three directors of technical education in New Zealand. On the left is Randolph Gordon Ridling, director of the Wellington Technical College from 1931 to 1950. In the centre is William Sanderson LaTrobe, creator and director of the Wellington Technical College from 1904 to 1919. At the time that this photograph was taken, he was superintendent of technical education, a post he held from 1919 to 1938. On the right is John Henry Howell who was director of Christchurch Technical College from 1906 to 1919, and of Wellington Technical College from 1919 to 1931.
