Rough head and shoulders sketch of the right profile of a Maori man with full facial moko and greenstone(?) earring, wearing a collared open-neck shirt.

As a small boy at Mercury Bay, this chief was patted on the head by Captain Cook who gave him a nail.

This is a preliminary sketch for a more finished work in the British Library - see ATL photo at A-147-002.
