- Description
Major Gustavus von Tempsky of the Forest Rangers, at the moment of his death at the hands of Maori in the bush at Te-Ngutu-o-te-Manu, South Taranaki, on 7 September, 1868. Von Tempsky is falling backwards, sword in hand, in the centre of the view, surrounded by bodies. There are other soldiers and Maori in and around the trees and undergrowth.

Painting is trimmed to edges and cannot be placed on a stretcher. Surface uneven with cracks and losses. Back of canvas covered with wax.
