The diary is only for one year but has detailed daily entries generally beginning with the weather and an account of his sciatica, with details of the morphine he was taking for it at the head of the entry. Calkin mentions who was staying at the boarding house, records financial matters, gardening activities, his bootmaking, shop and photography businesses, the cases where he helped in dentistry (administering anaesthesia) and any unusual happenings or circumstances, such as going on a musical tour
