Description

Unidentified rangatira (Māori chief), circa 1861, possibly photographed during a conference of chiefs at the Melanesian Mission, Kohimarama, Auckland. He wears a suit and has a moko kanohi or Māori facial tattoo (poniania and pawaha). Photograph taken by John Nicol Crombie.
