- Description
Attendance rolls generally kept by native school teachers, though there is evidence of William Colenso's hand in some of them.
Earliest register (1844) is for the school at Waimate, Northland; the remaining books relate to schools in the Wairarapa district.
It is noteworthy that both Mohi Torohanga and Paratene Te Okawhare are listed as pupils at the schools; they are the source of the text scribed by Te Whatahoro and subsequently used by S P Smith in writing about Maori cosmology and origins (See JPS 103 no 2); other notable pupils include Te Horo and Paora Te Potangaroa who both established prophetic movements (see Elsmore, B 1989 Mana from Heaven)
There is a note on one of the books in Elsdon Best's hand.
