The New Zealand Ballet Company was founded by Poul Rudolph Gnatt in 1953. Gnatt was the first Artistic Director of the Ballet from 1953 to 1962. The Company received a charter from the Queen in 1984 and became the Royal New Zealand Ballet. In 1998 the company moved into its own premises adjacent to the St James Theatre in Wellington.
