The first one is 12 pages with two inserts, with a closer view of the station, homestead, outhouses, etc. The second, 14 pages plus 1 insert is a wider view of the countryside from a higher, more distant position. Notes include vegetation and landmarks, including Tekoa, Mt Veto, Jollie's Pass, Maori Kaik, Domett's run, top of Mt Pam [i.e. Mt Palmerston], Duppa's nephew Bryan, and his dog Norma. Attribution based on style. George Curtis arrived in New Plymouth in 1849 on the 'Pekin'. Description: A Maori man and two women seated outside a carved gateway and the palisade of Maketu Pal, near Tauranga. The woman in the white skirt has been identified as Hineaturama, Phillip Tapsell's third wife. The seated man with the spear to the right is Hikaroa. The dog in the foreground was sent from Denmark to Philip Tapsell in New Zealand by his brother. It was a Dutch barge dog. The gate shown in this view is now in the Vienna Museum.
