Description: Show Taranaki scenes: Interior of George Curtis' house, Omata; Exterior of George Curtis' house, Omata; Alpha flourmill, Huatoki Valley and Victoria Road from Marsland Hill, New Plymouth; Henui (Weekstown) from the coastal dunes; Unidentified New Plymouth outskirts (possibly now Tukapa St / Westown). Attribution based on style. George Curtis arrived in New Plymouth in 1849 on the 'Pekin'. "As soon as a raupo house could be erected by the Maoris at Omata, George Curtis and his family went to live on his farm". (NZ Biogs, 1967, vol. 1, p. 53). Supplied titles. Description: Photograph album belonging to Pat Henry [i.e. Herbert Henry], containing views around Rodney District. Scenes include a gum diggers' camp, and a bullock team. The Waiwera Bridge, Waiwera, Wade (now known as Silverdale) and Wade River (Weiti River), and Dairy Flat are shown. One view shows `Our house', a weatherboard house with verandahs around two sides, set behind a large macrocarpa tree and smaller Norfolk pine. One portrait shows a young girl in a tug-of-war with a dog, and the other is that of two young women, identified as Annie and Bessie. Inscriptions: Album page - `To Pat, wishing you many happy returns of your birthday' (Original inscription); Album page - `Pat = Herbert Henry. Description: Shows the ornately carved frontage of a storehouse on two poles, with a notched climbing pole for access. In the left background sit a Maori man and women with a cooking pot and a dog in front of a large whare. There is a wooden enclosure fence with carved posts at the right and behind, including one human figurehead, a pipe in his mouth. There are woven bags of food possibly kumara stacked beneath the storehouse. Mount Egmont, its height and symmetry exaggerated, is in the background Lithograph, entitled "Wata or Provision house at Otumatua" (neg. 1/2-150220-F), was made by an unknown lithographer, after this watercolour, and included as an illustration in Wakefield, E. J. Illustrations to Adventure in New Zealand (London, 1845). A watercolour by Heaphy in the Hocken Library, Dunedin, is titled by the artist 'Gateway at Otumatia Pa'. The correct form of the name is not known Other Titles - Wata or provision house at Otumatua. Pa. Description: Shows group of wooden buildings in the foreground, possibly barracks, with people talking. A barrel, a trunk, a dog and a gun carriage are amongst the main group of people. Two men on horseback on a path to the left may be soldiers.There are horses in a corral in front of a large shed to the left. A path with steps leads past a telegraph pole to buildings on a rise in the middle ground, one building possibly being a church. Mount Egmont in the background. The constructions and people are probably associated with the raid on nearby Parihaka in November 1881.
