Description: Show Taranaki scenes: Interior of George Curtis' house, Omata; Exterior of George Curtis' house, Omata; Alpha flourmill, Huatoki Valley and Victoria Road from Marsland Hill, New Plymouth; Henui (Weekstown) from the coastal dunes; Unidentified New Plymouth outskirts (possibly now Tukapa St / Westown). Attribution based on style. George Curtis arrived in New Plymouth in 1849 on the 'Pekin'. "As soon as a raupo house could be erected by the Maoris at Omata, George Curtis and his family went to live on his farm". (NZ Biogs, 1967, vol. 1, p. 53). Supplied titles. Description: Sketches depicting incidents arising out of a taua or raiding party visiting Parawera settlement to exact revenge after a case of adultery. The marae, various groupings of iwi, dances, fights, haka, horseriding, and competitions are depicted, along with a visit from the police. The Parawera group were Ngati Apakura, Te Wherowhero's iwi, and the visitors in search of payment were Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Hourua and Ngati Koroki. Ngati Haua are also mentioned in one sketch. Description: A taller and a shorter Maori man, both with moko, performing the hongi on Picton wharf, watched by sailors on the ship moored at the wharf, and two Pakeha men and a dog standing on the wharf. Description: Contains photograph album, loose prints, and negatives of images taken on the Chatham Islands between circa 1900 to 1930s, with most images taken in circa 1920s. Local photographer and farmer Owen Cecil Mitchell created the negatives, most likely compiled the album, and stamped the backs of many of the prints, in ink, with his name. A few prints are identified on the backs and some have corresponding negatives. Numerous negatives do not have corresponding prints and some later images may show scenes in Christchurch. - Photographs chiefly illustrate life on the Chatham Islands, including portraits of individuals and groups and community events and industry (mainly sheep farming). Landscapes, wildlife, flora, and buildings are also covered. - The collection contains images of men holding human bones, mainly in a beach setting.
