Description: 46 images of the Duke of Gloucester's tour of New Zealand in 1934-5 including: nine of his visit to Rotorua including Maori kapa haka; one of veterans at the bridge of remembrance in Christchurch; one of him opening Tekapo bridge and another of the party at Tekapo House hotel; one of him in a crowd outside the railway station in Hokitika; one of him inspecting a parade of nurses; one of him visiting a traditional whare; two of him as a jockey at a race meeting; three of the felling of a kauri tree; seven of his stay at Longbeach sheep station, Ashburton County; and two of him at the Waitangi memorial. Description: Shows lake in distance; party hunting wild pig in foreground with dogs, worrying the pig. The party includes a Maori man dressed in traditional costume. In: Brees S C Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand. Plate 4, No 10, text p. 9. Brees stresses the value of the flat land in this area, its quality for farming and the building of part of a road across the Rimutaka Range. Brees spent some time in the Wairarapa surveying until the New Zealand Company suspended its operations in 1844, so the engraving is presumably based on a drawing completed between 1842 (Brees' year of arrival in New Zealand) and 1844. Description: Photographs relating to the Dog Tax Rebellion, also known as the Dog Tax War, taken May 1898 in Rawene by Charles P Dawes. The photographs show troops lined up and posing with rifles, a group of men in uniform in front of tents, and a group of Maori civilians laying down arms. In May 1898 Hokianga was the scene of the 'Dog Tax Rebellion' which arose when the Mahurehure hapu of Ngapuhi tribe refused to pay a dog tax instituted by the local county council. Description: An extensive view of the Wairarapa Plain with Wairarapa Lake on the left, Rimutaka Range and Tararua Ranges in the background. A boar hunt is underway in the foreground, with one Maori man and a dog to the right. The Maori man is dressed in traditional costume, and appears to be carrying a rope. Bracken and ferns in the foreground and clumps of bush on the plain. The accompanying text reads: This district lies about fifty miles from Wellington by the nearest road. Mr Charles Kettle, one of the Company's Assistant-Surveyors, ascended the Manawatu River, which flows along the other side of the Tararua Mountains, and entered this plain by rounding the low spurs at the extreme right of the view. The forest consists of the largest trees. The open tracts are covered with grass, feern and tutu bushes. Wild hogs abound in this plain. The Ruamahanga flows through the midst of it, and passes through Lake Wairarapa into Palliser Bay. The plain of the Ruamahanga is about sixty miles in length, with an average breadth of twelve miles. There is one small native village at its northern extremity, and another on the beach at Palliser Bay, as well as a whaling station supplied from Wellington. Lake Wairarapa is ten miles long, and from two to three miles broad. Between the lake and the sea several settlers from Wellington have recently squatted with large herds of cattle, which they drove along the sea-coast. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Ngāti Hauā group at Te Wai o Turongo meeting house at Waharoa, near Matamata. Seated in the centre of the group is Hohua Ahowhenua (d 1889). Photograph taken between 1880 and 1887 by Hemus & Hanna of Auckland. Other - Note that 1/2-018166 is a similar image This negative is part of a sequence which includes a portrait of Hohua Ahowhenua which was commissioned by Josiah Clifton Firth. The original negatives for these images, which are now part of the Alexander Turnbull Library collections, are dry plates, which would indicate that they were taken after 1880, but before Firth's departure from his Matamata estate in July 1887. In "Nation making" (pp 260-261) Firth states that after his departure Hohua was abandoned in the runanga house by his people. This photograph would appear to have been taken before this. The negatives form part of the collection of Herman Schmidt. Schmidt in 1904 took over the studio of Hemus & Hanna, who are therefore most likely to have taken the images.
