- Description
Collection relating to New Zealand war memorials. Predominantly comprises analogue and digital photographs of the war memorials in situ taken by Jock Phillips and Chris Maclean. Includes images taken of Anzac Day events and other ceremonial or social activities. Includes analogue and digital copies of 19th and early 20th century photographs relating to the creation and installation of war memorials in New Zealand.
Also includes a digital spreadsheet relating to their research work into New Zealand war memorials.
A selection of photographs were published in "The Sorrow and the Pride: New Zealand war memorials" (1990) and "To the Memory" (2016) by Chris Maclean and Jock Phillips.
Identification of war memorials and locations has been made using annotation on the original slide mounts and/or original housing.
Record titles are taken or transcribed from the original enclosures and from the photographs.
Arrangement: Photographs were delivered to the Library in small slide boxes and in ring binders which contained various photographic formats. The photographs were arranged within the ringbinders by conflict, location, and type of memorial, with the exception of two ring binders of images selected for publication. The 35mm slide boxes were delivered in one box, each box of slides labelled with the conflict to which the war memorials related. Digital files were delivered on separate CD and USB objects. The Library has preserved the original arrangement where possible.
The friendship between New Zealand historian Jock Phillips and New Zealand writer and craftsperson Chris MacLean resulted in a collaborative project for which they travelled throughout New Zealand photographing war memorials erected to commemorate World War I, World War II, the South African War (Boer War), Inter-tribal conflicts, and the New Zealand Wars.
