- Description
Comprises original black and white film negatives of photographs taken by Max Oettli between 1964 and 1975; and digital scans of these negatives. The scans of each negative strip were made by Max Oettli between March 2017 and March 2019.
Images show street scenes, businesses, buildings, and the urban landscape around New Zealand, mainly Auckland. Images also show parties and social occasions, demonstrations, musical or artistic performances, and public events. Images of people include self-portraits, as well as many images of Oettli's friends or acquaintances, and staff at Auckland University and Elam. Many images were taken at Oetti's flats around Auckland (Grafton Road, Jervois Road, Titirangi).
Oettli's early images (1964-1966) include scenes at Fairfield High School in Hamilton, and images of Oettli's and animals on the family farm.
Arrangement: Material is arranged as originally accumlated and donated. Negatives were ordered chronologically by approximate date taken and partially organised into annual sequences by Max Oettli. Each annual sequence was given a new letter reference that was marked on negative sleeves, along with the film number.
Letter identifiers either denote a specific meaning, or are sequential. 'C' stands for Craccum; 'D' is sequential; 'J' stands for 'Journalism' and refers to a time when Oettli was considering that as a career; 'K' is sequential; 'M' refers to Leica M Series cameras used by Oettli; 'N' is sequential; 'P' stands for 'Post' and refers to the period of time after his exhibtion 'Visible Evidence'; 'Q' is sequential.
Remaining sleeves are un-marked or are marked with Oettli's one-off notes. These sleeves have been left in chronological order.
