Description

Photographs taken during Ernest Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition, 1907-1909, by an unidentified photographer.

Many of the photographs refer to pages in Shackleton's book "The heart of the Antarctic: the farthest south" published soon after he returned to England.

This album consists mainly of landscapes, many showing various depots established by the men, and many with different types of ice encountered by the explorers, including pack ice, brash ice, pancake ice, floe ice, snow bergs, icebergs and pressure ice.

One photograph shows a party of three men at the Magnetic Pole. Alistair Forbes Mackay, Douglas Mawson and Professor Tannatt William Edgeworth David are seen on 16th January 1909 (at 3.30 pm), with Professor David announcing "I hearby take possession of this area now containing the Magnetic Pole for the British Empire".

Exhibited in 'Collect' exhibition on the role of collection in the Alexander Turnbull Library, mounted in National Library Gallery, 15 December 2006.
