Description

Interview with Joe (Joseph) Harris, born in Auckland in 1918. Talks about his parents having met in England but marrying in New Zealand. Discusses being Jewish, attending Hebrew School, the family attending the Orthodox Synagogue in Auckland, and playing in a Jewish cricket club. Recalls moving to Wellington about 1930 but returning to Auckland in 1932. Talks about getting a job in a cycle shop when he was 15, being a crew member on a yacht, and owning a motorbike for a few years. Refers to returning to Wellington in 1939 when he was 21, where he drove a delivery van for his uncle's dry cleaning company. Discusses the Wellington Jewish community and Jewish refugees and immigrants in the 1930s. Talks about working in the parts department of Avery Motors and another automotive company until he joined the Army and after he returned from the War.

Discusses being called up to the Army in 1940, being passed over because he had a heart murmur, but volunteering as a driver for the Army Headquarters Transport Section in 1941 where he became a Sergeant in charge of motor vehicle distribution throughout New Zealand. Refers to being regraded as fit for overseas service and receiving basic training at Linton and Trentham in preparation for going overseas in the 12th reinforcement.
