Gnatt studied at the Royal Danish Ballet School and became principal dancer in 1949. Settled in New Zealand in 1952, founded the New Zealand Ballet in 1953. Continued to direct the New Zealand Ballet until 1962 then moved to the Australian Ballet. Retired to Otaki in the 1990s
