Description: Medal recto shows a female classical figure with a shield emblazoned with a coat of arms. She is holding up a wreath in front of the domed exhibition buildings. The verso shows a wreath of Australian flowers, and has inscribed the words: Julius von Haast, Ph.D, F.R.S. Other Titles - Newly Risen, How Brightly You Shine For the Sydney Exhibition, Julius von Haast arranged an exhibit featuring around 1000 stone implements and kitchen middens found in Canterbury and Otago, the Chatham Islands and the Solomon Islands. Description: Made up of five medals held within a jewellery box. Manufactured by V. Mayer’s Söhne, Vienna. Medals presented to Sir Julius von Haast: Austria - Order of Franz Josef - Knight. Red cross and gold with "FJ" on the front and "1849" on the back. Italy. Order of the Crown of Italy - Knight. White cross with crown on centre front, and an image of a bird on centre back. Austria. Order of the Iron Crown - 3rd class. Damaged - only the suspension and crown are present. Originally showed a gold double-headed eagle. Saxony. Duchies of Saxe-Altenburg, Saxe-Coburg & Gotha, Saxe-Meiningen. Ernst House order, Knight, second class. White cross with central green ring; silver crown on top and silver lion images at each corner between crosses. Germany. Order of Philipp / Hesse. Knight 1st class. White cross.
