Morton, John Edward (Prof), 1924-2011

From Auckland. Born 1 April 1924. Marine biologist, scholar, theologian, conservationist and television presenter. Published many articles, books and newspaper columns. Studied at the University of Auckland, gained a Doctorate in Science at the University of London in 1959. Chair of the School of Zoology and Biological Sciences at Auckland University from 1959 to 1988. In 1989 he became a founding member of the New Labour Party. Married to Pat Morton, two children. Died 6 March 2011.

Includes Morton's University of New Zealand MA thesis (1947), The Anatomy and Affinities of the Struthiolariidae (Fischer); remnants of his scientific papers, including journal off prints of articles by him; lectures and speeches by him; four marine field note books for Fiji (ca 1970s); and some maps, newspaper cuttings and publications collected by him. One large volume of pressed New Zealand ferns, with handwritten captions. Also detailed household accounts kept by Mrs Patricia Morton (1920-2011) from her marriage in March 1956 until April 1999 (with December 1968 - November 1970 missing), including initial three years in England.
