Worth, H. V., fl 1895-1899 :[Portrait of Hoani te Puna i Rangiriri Taipua] 1896

Date: 1896

By: Worth, Harold Vindale, 1851-1899

Reference: G-652

Description: Three-quarters formal portrait of a seated Maori man, probably in his fifties, white bearded and wearing a suit, in a studio setting, with the base of an elaborate pillar to one side and a draped curtain behind. The man is wearing a large diamond ring and a greenstone and silver or gold watch-chain. His hair is parted in the centre. Possibly painted from a photograph, or from life, in New Zealand (or England). Purchased with Worth's Maori Princess, G-651, probably the daughter-in-law of Hoani Taipua. On purchase, the subject was identified as Major Kemp (Keepa te a Rangihiwinui) but the identity is not supported by photographs. Other suggested identifications have been Tame Parata, Ropata Wahawaha and Wi Pere, but photographs do not support these identifications either, despite similar beards and moustaches. The strongest resemblance is to Hoani te Puna i Rangiriri Taipua - compare negative number F-112003 1/2 showing Hoani Taipua at a slightly younger age and 1258-35 mm showing him younger again. Descendants of Hoani Taipua, (Carkeek family members) on a visit on 13 July 2001, confirmed that he was the subject of the portrait. The ring worn is still held in the family. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - H.V.Worth F.R.H.S. 1896 [in red brushpoint] Quantity: 1 oil(s). Physical Description: Oil on canvas, in storage frame, 122 x 965 mm (sight) Provenance: Owned by Auckland art dealer W. A. Henderson (70 Reihana St, Orakei) in 1985, see TL3/1/1 2 October 1985 & reply 25 October 1985; Offered at Christies, London, 29 October 1987, lot 144.
