Fox, Bill, 1826?-1890

Gold prospector. Born in Ireland in 1826 or 1827. Worked on the Californian diggings, and came to the Otago goldfields after the news of Gabriel Read's discovery reached California. One of the first to discover gold in the Shotover. In 1867 he travelled to the West Coast and found payable gold at Brighton. He died in hospital at Reefton. The Fox River (western slopes of the Paparoa Range, Buller County) and the Fox Range are named after him. (No relation of Sir William Fox after whom was named the Fox Glacier and its River).
