Artist unknown :Das Innere einer Hutte auf Nukahiva [1804. Frankfurt, Friedrich Wilmans...

Date: 1804 - 1812

Reference: A-117-003

Description: Scene inside a dwelling, with a seated naked woman and two small children. A naked man covered with tattoos is holding the woman by the wrist, beginning to tattoo her, and a second man, also tattooed, entering the door of the hut, is holding a pig's head as a present for the tattooist. There are several ornaments or tools against the back wall of the house. The text accompanying the original German version of this illustration has a slightly variant title: Das Innere einer Hutte von Nukahiva. The description, translated, reads: "in which a master of tattooing sits and practises his art. A tabooed person is entering the hut, bringing a pig's head as a present for the artist. Plate 11, text p.111." This print is a later and variant version of the engraving in Langsdorff. The image is reversed and has lost some detail and has acquired a title as part of the image, instead of the title on the opposite page seen in the original Langsdorff version. It is also slightly smaller. The Library's copy of Langsdorff at 910.4/P/LAN/1812 comprises a volume of plates and a single volume of text. Baron von Langsdorff accompanied Krusenstern on his voyage around the world, visiting Nukuhiva in 1804. This illustration was published in Langsdorff's acount of the voyage, but not in Krusenstern's. Other Titles - The inside of a hut on Nukuhiva, Marquesas Islands 1804 Extended Title - From: Langsdorff, G. H von. Bemerkungen auf einer Reise um die Welt in den Jahren 1803 bis 1807.
