Description: A seated half-profile view of Lawrence Baigent (1912-1985), in his late thirties. He is seated at a table, his left arm resting on the table and his face supported by his right hand. Behind him are details of the room in which he sits: at left, a bookcase housing his books and at right, a detail of a Japanese print. The verso of the painting shows a portrait of Rita Angus, dating from about ten years prior (1938/1939). Identified as the last of a series of about 11 paintings of Baigent executed by Bensemann. The background motif and colour are similar to a painting made in 1937, which was painted at the flat they shared in Cambridge Terrace, Christchurch. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - LB / 48 [painted on spine of one of the books, in brushpoint] Quantity: 1 oil(s) with separate portrait painted on the verso.
