Medical practitioner, scientist, journalist and politician. Born in Dublin; may have spent some years in the United States; believed to have gone to NSW in 1830s and then to Auckland in Dec 1839/Jan 1840. Studied medicine and graduated MD. Witness to signing of Treaty of Waitangi. Married Jane Henderson Essex, daughter of Lieutenant Essex RN, 1846 at Nelson. Held appointments, and was elected to Auckland Provincial Council. Later a member of the Legislative Council and briefly, Colonial Secretary. Also established a brickworks at Avondale in 1870s, having earlier received a medal at the New Zealand Exhibition (Dunedin, 1865) for his efforts to foster the manufacture of pottery.
