Description: Rough listing of business records, 1915-1976, including records of Marsden Research Station and letters of Thomas Cawthron (1901-1915). Also contains papers of Dr D Miller, former director, housed in Entomology Division, Mount Albert Research Centre, Auckland. The Cawthron Institute, Nelson, was founded 1920 as a result of a bequest made in the will of Thomas Cawthron a Nelson businessman. Since its establishment the institute has been mainly concerned with conducting of scientific research in the field of NZ primary production, dealing with animal and plant diseases and ways of increasing production. Includes detailed photographs of various laboratory procedures and apparatus, including meat dehydration plant in the Meat Research Laboratory; mass spectrometer; electron microscope; Borthwick Beta-Ray apparatus; soil consolidation machines; geothermal bores; knock resistance tests, with a CFR engine; separating constituents of butter fat, the Fats Research Balance Room; members of the Soil Survey Conference in Napier, 1950, and members of the Geological Survey Conference in 1952; Rongotai Aerodrome under construction; the Magnetic Observatory building in Christchurch; the Dominion Observatory, and the Seismological Observatory; Crop Research Division buildings; Hop Research Station; members attending the Grasslands Conference in 1933; and members attending the Seventh Pacific Science Congress in 1949.
