Description: The scene is set in the cellar of the tavern `Blood Bowl House', renowned for its seedy, rowdy and violent ambience. Men are fighting, a soldier with his back to the viewer is standing next to the fireplace pissing against the wall, the dead body of a murdered passer-by is being shoved down through a trap-door in the floor. Idle and his accomplice, recognisable as the same person he gambled with in Plate 3, are dividing their pickings, two fob watches, a snuff box and some trinkets. Behind him his mistress is betraying him to the high constable who is accompanied by officers of the Watch. She receives payment in cash in her out-stretched right hand as she points to Idle with her other hand. Beneath the main image is a scriptural text in a cartouche. Proverbs, Chapter VI, Verse 26. The adultress will hunt for the precious life. Inscriptions: Recto - above image - Title Tells the contrasting stories of two apprentice weavers, Goodchild and Idle. The series was aimed at the ordinary people, at the masters who would hang these prints in their shops and at their apprentices. Description: Idle is in bed with his mistress, `a common prostitute'. While she gloats over his highwayman's loot he starts up in bed, terrified at every sound. The cat chasing a rat down the chimney and the dislodged bricks make him sit up in bed, his hair on end and fear in his eyes. The bolted door is wedged by planks; the rat darts over a pair of crossed pistols lying beside a glass and bottle on the floor beside the bed. Phials on the mantel-piece show that sickness and disease are ever attendant in prostitution. To keep out the cold an old hoop petticoat has been placed across the window behind the broken bed. Beneath the main image is a scriptural text in a cartouche. Leviticus, Chapter XXVI, Verse 36. The sound of a shaken leaf shall chace him. Inscriptions: Recto - above image - Title Tells the contrasting stories of two apprentice weavers, Goodchild and Idle. The series was aimed at the ordinary people, at the masters who would hang these prints in their shops and at their apprentices. Description: A lively and noisy brothel scene shows Tom in the Rose Tavern. He is drunkenly sprawled in a chair to the left of the room with one foot resting on the table in the centre and holding a glass of wine by its stem. The prostitute beside Tom has just stolen his pocket watch and is handing it to another standing behind. A quarrelling pair of women at the table are spitting gin. The woman in the foreground is stripping and her discarded corset lies nearby. The art on the walls is all debased - portraits of Roman emperors, are all defaced (except for Nero), the mirror is smashed, the map of the world is set on fire by a careless girl's candle. The women's pock marks and patches spell disease, and the box of pills on the floor hints that Tom is already infected. The porter Leathercoat is bringing a large platter and lighted candle into the room. Beside him is a heavily pregnant woman singing the lewd ballad `Black Jake'. In the corner behind the open door are a trumpter and a harpist. Verse beneath - O vanity of youthful blood.... Source of descriptive information - Jenny Uglow. Hogarth, a life and a world. London, 1997. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Text and title Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). Physical Description: Engraving, 356 x 410 mm, on sheet 485 x 652 mm
