The man reads a newspaper announces the violence, natural disasters, and disease epidemics happening in various places around the world. In light of this he suggests staying in New Zealand and visiting a small Southland town called Lumsden. 2000 people died and a further 8000 were injured in an earthquake in Algeria on the 21 May, 2003. The United States invasion of Iraq, which began on 20th March 2003, descended into further chaos and began to be touted as the second Vietnam; this also heightened the threat of terrorist attacks.
