Description: Earnscy Weaver was born in Clyde in 1950. His parents were Charles Earnscy (Earnc) Weaver and Doreen Craig. Describes how his grandfather dredged and sluiced gold and then in the early 1900s began growing cherries, pears, apricots, apples, plums, greengages, walnuts and almonds. Talks about how his grandfather built the original home out of schist. Recalls how his father and his brothers were all involved in fruit growing. Mentions how his father sold half his property in the 1960s because of poor health. Describes going into a partnership with Fay Richwhite and Co which took over his orchard and included it in a development of another one hundred acres of orchard known as Summerfruit Orchards Ltd. Describes how the water rights were taken from mining rights. Comments on the huge importance of water and disputes caused by it. Comments on changes in planting and pruning technique, frost protection and spraying. Mentions hydraulic ladders. Discusses a new style of spraying known as Integrated Fruit Protection (IFP) which involves the use of softer chemicals and targeted rather than blanket spraying. Discusses the use of air freight for transporting fruit. Mentions that his father was a progressive grower. Discusses the role of women in the orchard business. Describes how his grandmother had home help and his mother worked very hard at feeding staff and family several times a day but was not involved in decision-making. Discusses the work of his wife, Irene Weaver, in orchard office administration. Mentions her involvement in decision-making until they both became employees of the company. Describes working on the orchard as a child and the work of some of his own family on the orchard. Comments on his discouraging their orchard work as it is a hard life. Recalls doing a Diploma in Horticulture at Lincoln and working in Hawkes Bay orchards for a year before returning to the family property. Describes working closely with Hort Research. Talks about the Earnscleugh community since World War II and changes in it as orcharding becomes more business minded and competitive. Description: Alpine views in the South Island and two views of rock formations in the North Island taken by G E Mannering. There are also four images of the Matterhorn in Switzerland, which were probably all taken by Wehrli AG, a photographic company between 1900 and 1924 (nos. 27, 32, 50 and 57). Images numbered 36, 41 and 47 show views from the Godley Riverbed, with the various mountains identified in pencil on the back. No. 7 shows clouds above Waiho with the note "The condensing power of mountains, Waiho". Several images look down to Bealey township from the top of the pipeline. Photograph 24 is probably of the helichrysum species. Several views show close-ups of glaciers, including ice pinnacles on the Franz Josef Glacier (no. 20); one of "hummocky ice" on the Godley Glacier (no. 37); Mannering's two young sons on the Franz Josef Glacier (no. 38); broken ice on Franz Josef Glacier (no. 39); a sand cone on the Tasman Glacier, with four women and three men in the backgound (no. 43); and the terminal glacier face (Franz Josef?). Image no. 25 has identification which reads "Organs - Sandstone cliffs on Mahaka (Mohaka?) River, Hawke's Bay. Image no. 34 shows Samuel Butler's cottage at Mesopotamia Station; and no. 56 probably shows the Cass Field Station. Many of the images by Marcel Kurz show mountaineers, bivouacs and camping sites in the mountains, including the Pioneer Ridge Bivvy. Image no. 133, taken by Marcel Kurz shows Ned Porter, Clive Barker and Doris Barker (later Mrs Porter), on the second ascent of Mount Haidinger in 1927. Most identified places are listed above. The political cartoons refer to an electricity crisis as well as issues concerned with the Wellington City Council. In one of the Wellington cartoons the name MacAlister is mentioned. The sporting portraits feature speedway champion Percy Coleman and boxer Dave Sands, as well as wrestlers Lofty Blomfield, Earl McCready, and Bill Kuusisto. Description: John Taylor and his twin brother Geoff were born in Dunedin in 1936. His parents were orchardists Geoff and Belle Taylor and his grandparents and great grandparents were also orchardists. Describes always having been interested in orcharding. Discusses the discovery of gold by Hartley and Reilly in 1862, and their mining for some months before declaring the area a goldfield. Talks about how some of the miners, including his great grandfather John Dawson and Andreas Iversen, got blocks of land and stayed in the area. Mentions that John Dawson married Ellen Darling, an Irish orphan brought out by Donald Reid, in 1864 and they lived under canvas for two years. Describes the original construction of their house in cob with rock and stone additions later. Discusses water rights in some detail and their administration under the Mining Act. Mentions the role of `Frenchman Feraud' in establishing irrigation. Describes the employment by John Dawson of Chinese miners to build a rock wall round his property and his use of them on their orchard. Mentions that the miners had done paddock mining which opened up the ground for cherries. Discusses the importance of Ellen Dawson and Evie Taylor (nee Dawson) in establishing and improving the orchard. Notes that his mother, Belle Taylor (nee McArthur) was from a Scottish farming tradition and fitted into this role also. Describes how John and Ellen Dawson enjoyed selling cherries at race meetings and established a specialty with their Dawson cherry. Describes how fruit was taken to the rail head at Lawrence and later Ranfurly. Discusses growth of apricots, cherries, pears, apples and plums and the different varieties grown. Mentions that there was large scale planting in the Fruitlands area after World War I. Describes the partnership within the Taylor family. Discusses how they try to keep two or three years ahead of the market by always gradually introducing new varieties. Mentions the influence of Asian tastes, including Asians in Auckland, on the cherry market. Describes how fruit can be transported to Auckland by refrigerated truck within thirty hours. Discusses tree spacing, orchard cultivation, irrigation, frost fighting, pruning and spraying. Mentions that Taylor's orchards have always dealt with Turners and Growers. Mentions that her mother was Isobel McArthur from Strath Clyde and her father, Geoff Taylor, grew up on the family orchard in the Conroys Gully area. Gives details about the Taylor family. Comments on the influence of both the Taylor and Dawson grandmothers in establishing the orchard. Describes how Granny Dawson acquired the trees for the orchard by bartering produce. Talks about the location of the orchard. Describes the original house on the orchard, `Rosevale', the cottage and `Knowl Top' which was built in the 1920s. Recalls the vegetable garden, flower garden, tennis courts and shrubbery. Describes how her mother was the main caregiver for the children, cooked for large numbers on the orchard, worked in the packing shed and was active in the local community. Describes how students working on the orchard were treated as family members and became lifetime friends. Recalls tennis parties and swimming at Conroys Dam. Recalls the role of her father in orchard planning and management and his involvement with the DSIR. Talks about his having gone to Ruakura after high school before returning to the orchard. Mentions the orchard was part of the research station at Earnscleugh and he attended meetings in Wellington. Describes how the seven children in the family attended boarding school either at Waitaki Boys High School or Craighead. Recalls helping on the orchard as children, going rabbiting and smashing birds' eggs to reduce the number of birds. Discusses the orchard's reputation for quality over one hundred and thirty years. Mentions that Taylors and Iversons were the first orchardists in the area. Recalls stone cottages built by Chinese miners in the area. Mentions the film `Illustrious energy' which was made in the area. Describes how they began producing the Dawson cherry and gives details of other varieties of cherries. Mentions apricots, peaches and nectarines. Comments on her father's willingness to experiment. Describes cultivation and spraying. Comments on the absence of protective clothing. Recalls the use of frost pots from the 1940s to 1960s to prevent the effects of frost on the fruit. Describes how labour intensive this system was and its replacement by overhead sprinkler systems.
