Description: Consists of 3 logs written by Mackay on the whaling ship Splendid for the years 1875-1877. The logs detail the voyages of the ship from Port Chalmers to various places around New Zealand, the Southern Ocean and into the Pacific. Also contains discharge papers dated Oct 1877; an annotated copy of `The Cruise of the Cachalot' by Frank T Bullen published in 1899 and an annotated proof of a galley for a newspaper article, ca 1930s, reporting on Mackay's life and his claim that Bullen's 1899 book was in fact based on the Splendid. Description: Comprises copy of a letter from Geoffrey Hattersley-Smith to Sir Gerald Elliot, Elliot's reply and a copy of a further letter from Hattersley-Smith. They discuss Sir Ernest Shackleton and his connections with the South Georgia whaling station at Grytviken, books on Shackleton and his expeditions, the attitude of the Grytviken whalers to Shackleton, the case of Frederik Hjalmar Johansen, the forgotten "Third Man" of Roald Amundsen's expedition to the South Pole, and the proposal to restore South Georgia to a pre-contact state. Source of title - Supplied by Library Geoffrey Hattersley-Smith, a glaciologist and principal scientific officer for British Antarctic Survey, had a particular interest in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions, as did his friend Sir Gerald Elliot, who had family connections with the Christian Salvesen Company and had written on that firm's whaling operations in the Southern Ocean. Description: Shows a whale "in his 'flurry', or dying". A sperm whale lies on its back, surrounded by three rowboats. In the boat at the right are six figures, four rowing and two standing; one of those standing pushes a harpoon into the whale. The boat in the left foreground is sinking with two men on board. The third rowboat is in the middle distance with two sailing ships in the distance. According to the account cited on pages 328-329, it is blood rather than water gurgling from the spout of the dying whale.
