Description: Shows interior of hut, with four Tahitians kneeling around a large bowl, three demonstrating by pointing to their mouths as naked child offers small bowl to the fourth man. A [French?] sailor holds the hand of a Tahitian woman who offers him a bowl. Description: A scene showing single- and double-hulled canoes on the water, fishing. The canoe in the foreground has two men rowing, a boy with a net and a dog sitting high at the stern of the boat, and two other men towards the front, one standing. There is a rooster perched on the outrigger. In front of the canoe, a lone man paddles a raft, with a small cargo of what could be coconuts. To the right of him, two fishing birds can be seen on a rock; one is taking flight. To the left of the scene, on the shore, a family fish for their food, using rod and line Possibly after William Hodges, 1744-1797, from Cook's second voyage 'A fishing scene observed by Lieutenant James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour, Tahiti, 1769. Description: A large group of Europeans on the right, including Captain James Wilson and his nephew William Wilson meeting with Tahitians on the left, including the Tahitian King and Queen. The King and Queen are held aloft on the shoulders of their bearers. Their blind witch doctor is crouching to the left. The picture was commissioned by the London Missionary Society. The oil painting from which this print was taken was commissioned from Smirke, the artist, by the London Missionary Society to commemorate the success of Captain Wilson's voyage to Tahiti. They sold the copyright to the print seller Jeffries in return for the first 400 copies of the print (100 coloured and 300 plain). See "European Vision and the South Pacific" by Bernard Smith, pp. 144-147; Also "Portraits of the Famous and Infamous" p. 324.
