Description: Arranged in four parts this journal explores the history and whakapapa of the Ngati Toa people. It includes detailed whakapapa from Marangaiparoa, son of Toa Rangatira, with a special emphasis on the relationships between Ngati Toa and other closely related Kawhia tribes. The manuscript also details the migration of the Tainui and Te Arawa canoes to Aotearoa, with accompanying karakia; Purakau, or short historical narratives, about numerous Ngati Toa tupuna (ancestors); The migrations of the Ngati Toa tribes from Kawhia to the Kapiti district; And an examination of Maori theological concepts, and includes a discussion about the descent of the Maori people from Adam and Eve. Also records the baptism of various people into the Mormon church at Takapuwahia pa, Porirua, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Publication - This manuscript may be the original source material used by Sir Maui Pomare for the book "Legends of the Maori", 2 volumes [1930]. Recalls father's involvement with Railways as a worker and being transferred to Wellington, Waipukurau and Hamilton; earthquake in Hawkes Bay; work experience at Hieatts Grocery shop and night school at Hamilton Technical College; joining Railways 1936; World War II experience in the Airforce, training in Canada; marriage and return to Hamilton when discharged. Gives early recollections of Dinsdale and describes the effect of the war on the area. Describes the business of Mr Hieatt - mostly country trade. Mentions staff: Mr Hieatt, Mr and Mrs Kelly, Mr Hamilton and self. Gives reasons for joining Railways and explains how Railway people provided sports for families, community building bowling club, tennis pavilion, croquet, cricket and football shed. Explains that 85% of children at Frankton School were children of railway workers. Mentions Mr Cliffe (headmaster). Talks about Mormon Temple and the first President. Description: A joint interview with Enid and Thornley Lewis. Enid born Auckland, brought up in Te Awamutu, moving back to Auckland after war and attending Teachers' Training College Auckland. Recalls: teaching experience at Huntly (3 years); marriage and move to Auckland; Hamilton Civic Orchestra where they both played; changes in teaching especially for women. Thornley talks about his watchmaking trade in New Plymouth after the war, training with F W Huthnance, New Plymouth, managing shops in Cambridge for two years - working for Jean Challiner for 5 years before starting own business in Frankton. Recalls his experience, while in the Army, as historian for Divisional Signals, in Italy and after war barracked in Florence, spending 6 months of afternoons working for Italian watchmaker. Describes house built by Cliff Potts, at Whatawhata Road. Refers to Rehabilitaton (REHAB) loan from State Advances at 3%. Mentions Javelin car used by family. Talks about Gibson Road Ratepayers Association which began 1965 and gives details of issues undertaken. Mentions R G Young who was Chairman - Enid Secretary. Father worked on railway at Katikati but moved to Wairoa Pa, Tauranga and then to Whakamarama (past Omokoroa) where Liza had her schooling. Recalls: leaving school at age of 14 years and working at various jobs - orchards and home help; marriage to Jim Hapeta, a builder at LDS College, whom she met through Latter Day Saints Church and coming to live at Dinsdale. Description: A joint interview with Thomas Henry McDell (Tom) and his wife Myrtle Eletha (Mryl). Tom outlines his family background - grandfather, Alexander Thomson of Tuhikaramea Road, Frankton, settled in area 1910 when land was covered in teatree bush which they cleared by hand. Talks about conditions in that era - no power and water from tanks and springs. Tom recalls schooldays in Frankton, with reference to Headmasters, Mr McLaurin, Mr Kent and Mr Leach; apprenticeship at Pomeroys (wagons and motor vehicles just appearing) and at the age of 35 went into carrying business on his own which continued for 25 years. Discusses first vehicles with reference to pneumatic tyres. Myrl's family farmed at Whatawhata. Recalls marriage in 1937 and building house with reference to Mr Bowden (builder). Talks about: families who lived in the area at that time and changes; mode of transport and early cars - Dodge and T Ford; Bus Service run by Jimmy Branton - buses built by Bill Goodwin who taught Tom the trade; childhood pursuits; social life with reference to Roxy Cinema Theatre, Frankton, and dancing to Ossie Cheeseman Band.
