Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in New Zealand (Program), International Award for Young People, The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award

Founded in 1956 in the United Kingdom by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and German eductionalist Kurt Hahn as an award programme for youth. By 2021 the prgramme operates in 44 countries. The programme takes between one to four years to complete and comprises volunteering, physical, skills, and expedition activities for young people 14 to 25 years.

In the United Kingdom the programme is run by the Duke of Edinburgh's Award corporation. Another body, The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Foundation, promotes the award internationally as the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award. The Foundation also co-ordinates award sponsor organisations outside the United Kingdom.

In New Zealand the inaugural meeting of the National Council of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award was held by Governor-General, Sir Bernard Fergusson in 1963, and a constitution drawn up. In 2009 the New Zealand programme was renamed from 'The Duke of Edinburgh's Award' to 'Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award' after Sir Edmund Hillary died.

Circa 2008 the New Zealand programme was called 'The Young New Zealanders Challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award'

In India the programme is known as 'International Award for Young People'.
