Kumea Mai Te Waka (Normanby, N.Z)

A whare nui on Ngārongo Marae at Normanby, Taranaki. Built circa 1854 on the site which in the 19th century was known as Ketemarae Pā. The whare nui was rebuilt in 1875 following damage during the Taranaki Land wars circa 1860s. It was again rebuilt in 1902 retaining some of the structural elements. A photograph taken by William A Price after 1902 shows a sign above the doorway in te reo Māori which indicates the whare nui was probably reopened on 2 September 1902. The building was refurbished in the late 1950s.
