Daily chronicle (London): More news than any other daily paper. Tuesday July 18. Alexan...

Date: 1882

By: Daily chronicle (London, England)

Reference: Eph-D-MAORI-1882-01

Description: A broadsheet advertising the daily edition for 18 July 1882, when there was British involvement in Egypt, and when Maori chiefs were visiting London to present a memo on 17 July, complaining of the recent treatment of Te Whiti. The Illustrated London news for Saturday 22 July 1882, page 87, reported: \"Three Maori chiefs were on Monday introduced to the Colonial Secretary by the Bishop of Nelson, in order to present a memorial bearing on the recent treatment of Te Whiti. They complained of the non-fulfilment of distinct promises, and asked for the appointment of an English Commission of Inquiry. Lord Kimberley explained that, while the Queen took great interest in the welfare of her Maori subjects, she considered the interests of the colony better attended to by arrangements made on the spot\". The Egyptian conflict began with Britains attempt to stabilise the Egyptian economy by persuading the Sultan of Turkey to replace Ismail Pasha with his son, Mohammed Tewfik. This provoked the Egyptian army chief Under-Secretary of War, Lieutenant-Colonel Ahmedt Arabi, to rebel. Britain responded by sending warships; this action escalated the hostility, and Britain bombarded Alexandria. Arabi then set fire to Alexandria, and withdrew. Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). 2.60 Linear Metres. Physical Description: Relief print on broadsheet, 765 x 527 mm.
