Remembers German bombings in 1943 and 1944. Outlines education and early musical tastes. Details job as cook, apprenticeship as pipe fitter and joining the Merchant Navy aged fifteen to become first class steward. Discusses first ship, the S.S. Dominion Monarch sailing to New Zealand via Africa, the Canary Islands and Australia.
