Description: Contains, as well as logs of whaling voyages, records of three of the ships of the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842. Includes diary of Giles Holmes, assistant surgeon on the Expedition, descriptions of islands visited, water depths and temperatures, the journal of John Emmons, also on the Expedition, a description of a fatal episode at Malolo, Fiji, newspaper clippings, abstracts of voyage, papers re court martials after the return of the Expedition, and a detailed description of the Antarctic voyage undertaken by the Expedition. Subjects include the principal towns, the local people and some traditional buildings, occupations such as fishing, tourist excursion operators, and traders in shops and markets. Also beaches and other scenic landscapes. The last three pages of photographs are a record of delegates and events at the 16th South Pacific Conference held in Noumea. Title supplied by Library.
