Set includes images of shipwrecks, including a ship that was sunk in the 1960 Chilean earthquake and the wreck of the 'Lord Lonsdale' at Punta Arenas. Valdivia images show foggy conditions with yachts at marina (one labelled "Valdivia Yate [Yacht?] Club 'Helene III' (Germany)") and trees as well as [grebes?] and chiloe widgeons [sic]. Set also contains images of an austral thrush "robin zorzal", hooded flying gull, an unidentified street scene, and a series of images of flamingos at flight and on land [most likely at Hornopiren]. Set contains images of flamingos (flying and wading) [most likely Hornopiren], an Andean condor in a cage (Punta Arenas), a Magellanic penguin on a nest [most likely Guafo Island] and flock swimming (at Puerto Montt), kelp geese and "b/backed and amer" oystercatchers (at Pumalin), South American terns, Inca terns (at Puerto Montt), black-backed kelp gulls "all phases" (at Angelmo, Puerto Montt), and a large flock of godwits (at Quellon). Also includes images of erosion in a fiord, the view to the northern point of Guafo Island (from on board the 'Totorore'), French sailors Patrick and Pierette Gary in an inflatable dingy, fog at Reloncavi, street with restaurant and maritime transport centre (at Quellon), and view of San Vincente port. Description: Album compiled from photographs taken 1872-1876 on the voyage of HMS Challenger. Photographs taken by three photographers: Corporal Caleb Newbold, official photographer of the Challenger Expedition, 7 December 1872 to 6 April 1874; Frederick Hodgeson, 8 June 1874 to 11 January 1875; and Jesse Lay, 14 January 1875 to 26 May 1876. Comprises topographical, ethographical and architectural views in Fiji, New Guinea, Admiralty Islands, Friendly Islands (Tonga), Hawaii, Society Islands, Valparaiso, Juan Fernandez, Puntas Arena and the Straits of Majellan. Included are portraits of Queen Salote Lupe Pau'u and King Taufa'ahu Tupou I of Tonga, King Kalakaua and Queen Emma of Hawaii, and Titaua Brander of Tahiti. The Challenger expedition was a scientific survey of the seabed of the worlds oceans, funded by the British Government.
