Photographs taken by three photographers: Corporal Caleb Newbold, official photographer of the Challenger Expedition, 7 December 1872 to 6 April 1874; Frederick Hodgeson, 8 June 1874 to 11 January 1875; and Jesse Lay, 14 January 1875 to 26 May 1876. Comprises topographical, ethographical and architectural views in Fiji, New Guinea, Admiralty Islands, Friendly Islands (Tonga), Hawaii, Society Islands, Valparaiso, Juan Fernandez, Puntas Arena and the Straits of Majellan.
