A bay approximately 10 km northeast of Kaiteriteri. The Anchorage is within the bay. Ngati Tama notes that as the name implies, the area was wealthy with trees and Ngati Tama and Te Atiawa established ship building operations there after their arrival in the rohe. This name was also recorded in Old Tasman Bay and other documents. Ngati Apa Tribunal evidence translated this as a type of tree. Rakauroa was the name of the bay, with many Ngati Apa occupation areas. Reference: WH Sherwood Roberts, Maori Nomenclature, p. 30.
