Description: Sheila Hogben's album of holiday photographs. The first holiday taken during the Christmas break, 1939-1940, included six girls camping at Waiau Pa, Manukau Harbour. The six girls with their bicycles ready to leave on their trip. Shots of the girls at their camp with two men, Charlie and Arthur. The rest of the photographs are mainly shots of the girls at tennis, at the beach, and in the pastoral landscape of the farm where they were camping. The second holiday was a tour of Northland made in January 1941. This time a group of four girls set out with their bicycles loaded down with camping gear. They also travelled by hitching rides on trucks and they are seen on their first lift on the back of a truck with their bicycles. Group photographs in bathing togs on the beach at Tikinui. Two girls swimming with two men in Three Chain Lake. The girls with the Meredith family, Glink's Gully. In Trounson Park Kauri Reserve and Waipoua Forest. Swimming at Waimamaku. All are part of a larger collection in Manuscripts comprising papers consisting principally of the records of the New Zealand Conservation Society, of which Professor McGregor was the founder and president, together with some records of successor and related conservation bodies. Much of the material relates to the attempts to conserve the Waipoua Kauri Forest. Description: Shows an abstract interpretation of Tane Mahuta within surrounding forest. The giant kauri stands imposingly at the front, represented in black and other dark colours, with the texture, light and shadow of the forest represented by the various fabrics used Steven regarded this work as a collaboration with the Maori artist Heni Sherratt, who designed the patterned fabric in the collage. The two met while Steven was teaching art to Maori children on the East Coast in the late 1940s. When she went to London in 1951 Steven was invited to participate in the Ascher Award at the Tate Gallery, and contributed this collage to the exhibiton. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - A.M. Description: Wally Tane was born 1924 in Waikara, Waipoua, South Hokianga. Talks about his father Mekene Tane Hohaia and his mother Tureiti Iraia. Discusses his father's work as a gumdigger and refers to Nick and Te Miringa Yakas. Describes schooling at Katui and Donnellys Crossing Schools, speaking Maori, racist attitudes and the effect of being educated in English only. Mentions Waikara and Waimamaku kaumatua and discusses land grievances. Talks about joining ATC, enlisting with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, training, resentment towards Americans in New Zealand, overseas service as a gunner in 14 Ventura Squadron, jungle training, being based at American camps in the Philippines and Japanese bombing raids. Gives his impressions of American servicemen, recalls the segregation of black and white servicemen. Talks about events in Auckland. Mentions rape. Reflects on returning to Wellington and Waikura. Talks abut employment with the New Zealand Forest Service and working at Waipoua Forest. Refers to planting of Te Roroa wahi tapu with pine trees. Describes meeting and eventual marriage to Margaret Yelash, life at the old family home in Waikara and of the problems of moving back to Dargaville. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This sheet starts with a series of maps, a world political map, map of the sea floor showing the relationship of New Zealand with the various undersea mountain ridges etc., New Zealand physical, rainfall, and geological maps. Views of Cape Maria van Diemen and Rangitoto nearing New Zealand on board ship. Auckland Harbour from the air; Auckland from Devonport; Ninety-Mile Beach; country near Waipoua Forest, the road into the forest, and Tane Mahuta, on the way to Kaipara; Kaihu River and coastal country between Trounson's Forest and Waihue; and Omamari beach and stream. The last five views show aspects of Holmridge farm owned by Mr Williams' friends Ruth and Vernon Woods.
