Description: Photographs of New Zealand military personnel serving in the Middle East and Italy during World War 2, 1943-1944, taken by various photographers and compiled for official purposes. Many individuals identified are listed above, but while many others are identified in group portraits they are not named above. This album changes between the Middle East and Italy, with the bulk of the Middle Eastern images between pages 1 and 71, and the Italian scenes on pages 49-52, and from 72 onwards, with a few Middle Eastern items interspersed. Recreation for soldiers with sporting activities including athletics, cricket, swimming, tennis and softball, some of which are in competition with personnel from other groups including South African Division Artillerymen. New Zealand engineers building a pontoon bridge across the Suez Canal with the help of Belgian Congo troops; NZ reinforcements arriving in the Middle East; troops voluntarily donating blood; parades and inspections by Freyberg and Inglis, and decorations presented by them (p 9-13, 23, 33, 36, 62). Hitchhiking from Maadi into Cairo; street tailors altering uniforms while the soldiers wait (p 15-16); camp cinema. Seddon album 1

Description: Photographs, chiefly taken by Louie J Seddon in 1897 on a trip around the world on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. They include several photographs on the group's return, especially one of Parliament Buildings, and five views of a reception for Mr Crow (R J Seddon's private secretary) by Ministerial Secretaries celebrating his return. Beneath the main inscription inside the first page is further information in Louie Seddon's copper-plate writing which reads "Our party consisted of my Father (the Right Hon. R J Seddon; Mother; Sister (Mary); Myself and Mr W Crow (Father's private secretary). We left Wellington, 15th April 1897, went via San Francisco - New York route to London - and returned by the overland (to Naples) and Suez Canal route, arriving Wellington, 8th Sept. 1897". En route to England a number of photographs show shipboard life, and several of the party in Samoa, one with Bishop and Mrs Wallis, and King Malietoa. In England there is one photograph cut from an English paper showing R J Seddon at Hawarden Castle with the Right Hon. Sir Wilford Laurier, Rt Hon and Lady Carrington, Rt Hon and Mrs W E Gladstone, Rt Hon G H Reid and Sir Louis Davies, July 1897. Also a sequence of views of the "Agent General's River Excursion on the Thames". The group visited various British Seddon family members at Eccleston and Bickerstaffe; and they visited Scottish writer and philosopher Thomas Carlyle's birthplace and grave. Photographs take up 32 pages with the rest blank apart from two newspaper cuttings attached to page 53. One is about Lady Freyberg at the Linen Guild (Evening Post, August 11, 1948?); the other about the ship Janie Seddon which was about to be sold (September 1946). On page 009 is a newspaper article on "King Dick" (Richard John Seddon), written in 1951 "By one who knew him" 45 years after his death. She is carrying a camera bag over her shoulder and a large package in her arms. One shows a group in Auckland, possibly at a party. One shows a group of people standing in front of the forum at Pompeii. Snowden, her friend Irene Watts, and other people are identified on the back of the Pompeii image. Description: Lantern slides showing historical sites and scenic views in Italy, Switzerland, France, England, and unidentified countries. The images were taken ca 1950s by unidentified photographers. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location and subject. The images include: - Buildings and ruins in Rome and the Vatican City, such as St Peter's Basilica, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum. Two images of a middle-aged woman, probably a companion of the photographer, standing in the streets (she also appears in image of Lake Garda). - Notable places in other Italian cities, including the basilica in Assisi, the Mausoleum of Theodica in Ravenna, the Ponte de Vecchio in Florence, and Genoa Harbour. Also buildings in Venice, including the Rialto, St Mark's Basilica, and the Palazzo Ducale. Description: Photographs of Eileen Fortune's trip from New Zealand to Europe include Sydney, Sydney harbour Bridge, scenes on board ship, the Suez Canal, and Roman ruins (possibly Pompeii). Two groups of photographs relate to China where Reo Fortune went to work after he and Eileen married in 1937. Four photographs show them newly married and on their way to Lingnam University in Canton. Others are of the house they lived in, their friends the Metcalfs, Chinese servants, and the university buildings and grounds A small group of photographs date from when they were in Canada in 1942 when Reo Fortune was working in the Anthropology Department of Toronto University. This group includes Eileen in a garden with Professor Thomas McIlwraith, head of the Anthropology Department. Another group of photographs relate to North American friends who lived in Vermont. Description: Album begins in Trieste, Italy, in 1946. As well as views of the town there are pictures of allied occupying troops parading, Tito Youth marching, and communists landing illegally from small boats in the harbour. Most of the rest of the album records a trip through Italy and France made by Perry and a group of friends during 1946-1947. A large part of the album contains images of the ruins and antiquities of Rome, Ostia, Veii, Pompeii, and Herculaneum. A page of photographs record the gigantic war memorial and cemetery at Redipuglia. Commissioned by Mussolini, it commemorates a hundred thousand soldiers of the Italian Third Army who died in the First World War. There are three breaks filled with images of England. One is of a house and garden at Wappenbury, just south-east of Coventry, another is of unidentified rural scenes and friends and family. The third is two pages of the 1951 motor racing events at Silverstone which was the venue for the Grand Prix of Britain. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Description: Mary MacGowan's journey out to new Zealand is represented by 8 photographs relating to Panama and the Panama Canal. There are some photographs collected during holidays in New Zealand which include views of Wairakei, Mount Ngauruhoe, Christchurch, Lake Kanieri, and Hongi's Track. Most of the photographs are associated with Mary's return trip to England. She left Wellington for Sydney on the "Awatea" visiting Hobart, Tasmania, and spending enough time in Australia to see Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. From Sydney she sailed for home on the "Orontes" via the Suez Canal. Groups of photographs record deck life and other passengers, the warves, people and places visited while in Colombo, Sri lanka (Ceylon), the approaches to Suez and a visit to the pyramids sphinx and temples in Egypt, a stop at Naples and a lot of photographs and some postcards of Pompeii, and finally views of Gibraltar including one of a Spainish guard at the boarder post. Description: Album documenting the life and career of Edgar James Kain (1918-1940) from childhood in Wellington until the outbreak of war in 1939. The album includes home life in Wellington, a family climbing holiday in the Southern Alps in 1929, scenes in Christ's College, Christchurch; voyage to England on SS Orford in 1936, including views in Colombo, Aden and Suez); flight training at the Brough Aviation Club; social life, sporting activities and friends in England, France and Italy in the period 1936-1939; and Royal Air Force activities in the period 1937-1939. This album is particularly strong on views of aircraft, personnel, bases and activities of the Royal Air Force in the immediate pre-war years. Kain was posted to No 73 Fighter Squadron, Royal Air Force, at Digby, Lincolnshire, in November 1937, flying Gloster Gladiator biplanes.
