Description: Album of photographs taken by unidentified photographers, taken in central North Island, and Otago and Southland regions, circa 1900s and 1910s. Some of the images are related to railways, including North Island scenes of the first passenger trip on 14th February 1909, during which the train stopped on the Raurimu Spiral because of a lack of engine power to haul it; the railway station at Longburn; a locomotive owned by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company; various engines including one image showing a J Class locomotive and an A Class locomotive with the caption "Note the difference in 20 years". South Island trains are shown in the Catlins District, including the construction of the Catlins River Railway, the Houipapa Quarry on the Catlins River Extension, loading wagons in the Balclutha ballast pit, the viaduct across the Catlins River at Houipapa, the Clutha Railway Bridge, and the Houipapa terminus on the Catlins River Railway. The North Island scenic views include the areas around Lake Rotorua, the Government Sanatorium at Rotorua, Sophia's Whare, a group of Maori boys diving for pennies, Whakarewarewa, Okere and Ohakune. Scenic views in the South Island are mostly around Dunedin (including Telford's country house in the Balclutha District), Clutha River, Balclutha, and the Catlins, including flax swamps and flax mills in the Catlins District. Description: A base map of the Rotorua district has numerous added notes, handwritten in the margins and over the top half of the map itself. These cover a variety of topics and include names of individuals, Maori chiefs, where they lived with some events and occupations. Multiple Maori place names are included with descriptive notes in English. Some dates are recorded with details of battles and numbers killed. Topographical features are marked, such as land cave, waterfall, hot spring and unrelated references such as a note about a half-full kete of tawa berries. Names include: Pirimi Mataiawea, Gilbert Mair, N'whakane, Paddy Murphy - deserter from Imperial Regt., Te Waharoa, T.H. Smith - Maketu, Tamati te Aorangi - Maori war veteran. When a new canoe was carved from totara it was taken to the cliff and propelled over the edge. If it survived the test it was put to use. Description: An album containing photographs taken in Taupo, Rotorua, and Northland, many with Maori subjects. The images were taken by Leslie Hinge, ca 1900-1909. Many feature short captions written by Hinge giving subjects and locations. Images show various subjects including: - Scenes in the Taupo area, such as an urupa (burial ground) on terraces above the Tongariro River, a waka being used as a bridge near Tokaanu, and the `Serpentine Lake' in the Onekeneke valley. - The Aratiatia Rapids and Huka Falls on the upper Waikato River. - Various geysers and hot pools in the Wairakei Valley. - Maori women at Ohinemutu, cooking and washing clothes.
